WhatsApp utility for e-commerce: order notices that actually get read

· 3 min read

“Where is my order?” is the most repeated ticket in any online shop. Most of them are avoided with three well-placed notices: order confirmed, order shipped with tracking, order delivered. WhatsApp is today the channel where those notices get read — and Meta's utility category is the right way to send them.

How it works (and who is in charge here: Meta)

Outside the 24-hour window of a conversation, WhatsApp only allows approved templates. Each template has a category —utility, marketing, authentication, service— and Meta assigns it, not you: if you try to slip a promotion into a utility template, Meta recategorises it as marketing and bills it as such. Our platform synchronises the template catalogue daily and prices with the category Meta states, so that what you pay matches reality.

The cost has two legs, and we publish it that plainly: our flat platform rate per message and the conversation that Meta bills separately against your WhatsApp Business account.

What your shop needs

  1. A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) with your verified number — the credentials are yours, not ours: no strings attached.
  2. Approved utility templates: confirmation, shipping, delivery, incident.
  3. The customer's opt-in to receive notices on WhatsApp, collected at checkout. Meta's policies require it, and the LSSI also protects customers from messages they did not ask for — even transactional ones, tell them.

When we still recommend SMS

Start in test mode without spending a single euro and measure the difference in reading on your own notices.

What is worth measuring from day one

Delivery and read rate per template. WhatsApp confirms reading; SMS, delivery. Compare both channels on your own orders — our history records each status with its date — and decide with numbers, not with impressions.

The quality of your number. Meta scores your WABA: too many users blocking you and your templates lose reach. It is another reason not to slip marketing in where the customer expects order notices: the score is yours, not ours, and protecting it means protecting your channel.

The real cost per notice. Add up the Meta conversation —billed to your WhatsApp Business account— and the published platform rate. For one-message notices, SMS often ties or wins; for sequences with customer replies, WhatsApp gives more per conversation. The API exposes the cost of each message sent, so the comparison is made with your own data.
